Central Kansas | Autonomy: Many who oppose cashless businesses do so on the principle of personal freedom and the right to choose how to pay. Some consumer boycotts against cashless establishments are specifically intended to preserve this freedom.
Also….these electronic transactions create a record. Such information being available to financial institutions and the government gives pause to some who fear an over-reach and even possible future control of spending. There is an apparent increase in distrust of government agencies so this scenario fits.
Having said all that, it is irrefutable that current society and culture changes are promoting cashless transactions at every level. High School snack bars might actually be better off not to have a change box there, maybe there are not as many that can receive cash and count back correct change as “back in the day” most of us grew up in. Change is tough for everyone. Most lads of a certain age carry a big back pocket wallet filled with crap we never need…but we have it with us (Farm Bureau card, contract card for welding gas, membership cards to 7 organizations, etc). Young folks these days have a slot on the back of their phone with driver’s license & debit card…that’s it. I understand the reluctance to do cashless, but it is inevitable. | |
