southern MN | Remember when nbc had the only late night show?
Then the fella with the big teeth got the Tomorrow talk show.
Then every network and the new start up networks - Fox, UP, WB, etc - got late night talk shows. Arsineo, Sajack, letterman, Leno, can’t remember the other ones. Then they all wanted a follow up later show to follow the first one. I think they ran out of guests to book there were so many talk shows!
I recall Pat Sajack’s show on cbs was deemed a little slow and dull, so the second season they revamped it… debuted the second season and the new set was a small dark cave like place, looked like the inside of an igloo you spray painted dark grey. I thought wow, if you wanted to spruce up and gas up a show, this new set is the opposite!
Conan O’Brien kinda had it figured out, said the format doesn’t fit young viewers any more. He was pretty good everywhere he went, other than at the nbc Late Show slot. Somehow he just did not fit there, it never gelled. Yea nbc goofed it up for him, but even so, I liked him late late, and I liked his more recent show, didn’t care for whatever he was trying or forced to try on the Late Show. He was probably the last good host for my tastes, even with the one (big!) flop.
Carson and Leno and the early versions of Letterman were the golden years.
I tried to hang on with Fallon for a while, but realized i was watching him because he was the best of the bad, and I should waste my time on something else. Kind of fell out of awe of the whole Hollywood set about the same time - maybe O’Brien was only half right, in that the format didn't fit older viewers either any more.
