The main thing that determines apple varieties is the market. Old varieties, like the McIntosh and the Red Delicious, do not fare well in the current market.
Now it is HoneyCrisp, Gala, Granny Smith, and a few others that are on the shelf at the grocery store. The customer is always right.
Overseas markets are critical for apple growers in Washington, and tariffs are not helping.
