How come in the past these diseases and pests didn't destroy the crop every year. Other than the plants and soil were healthier back then, what other reason could there be that the diseases didn't just run rampant every year or very often?

If we have such healthy plants today and such healthy soil today, how good of crop could you grow without herbicide, fungicide and insecticide?
Did I say none of this stuff existed before?
I did say in the past diseases and insects were randomly devastating. Scroll up. It's right there.
You use that chemical in early corn rootworm days and did it work? So why are you not using it now? What changed?
I could grow a lot better crop today without 'cides than Dad did back in the 50's-60's. But I'd have to use a lot more tillage, like they did back then. And then I'd have a lot more erosion. And I don't like erosion.
Even today, I don't crop dust most years. It's not needed. Certainly not anymore often than it was needed back then.
Are you asking why we don't use furdan today? First of all, it's not needed with Bt corn. And, then, there's the little issue of it's not registered anymore. If it was still labeled, I'd still use it once in a while, to try to minimize resistance to Bt. But it's not. And, so far, it's not a problem.
