Boone Co. Iowa | I think farmers are in a tough position because they are individuals trying to make a living in commodities where most of the other players (buyers of the commodities and sellers of chemicals and machinery and fertilizers) are all huge players with resources, assets, aggregated knowledge of markets and few competitors, etc.
In this situation, government guidance/assistance/regulation makes sense to stabilize prices, demand, supply, etc. And biofuels policy comes out of federal government, which along with trade policy has huge impact on the success of row crops as far as being profitable.
But we as a country need to get back to capitalism where supply and demand matters and businesses can fail.
I appreciate the original posters idea.
I just get frustrated with “us” turning to the government for a bailout. I keep thinking that land prices will moderate. Then government sends a check based on acres farmed, and the ****-show just keeps marching along.
