Subject: RE: Wobble in 1890 gauge wheels after replacing tires and bearings

I’m honestly not sure I would have been careful enough to prevent significant wobble had I demonstrated the first couple of them.

I know I would have done some things differently than they did. For example, they were letting the bearing seat itself as they drew the two halves together with the bolts whereas I was driving the bearing into the plastic half with a socket before I put the rest of the assembly together.

I am pretty sure I would have tightened in stages but I don’t know if I would have done the outer circle first like JAnderson was saying.

I’m pretty sure I would not have checked wobble before assembling all 60 tires and bearings. I had them pull them off the drill which was unfolded outside. Then brought them inside and replaced all tires. Then took them back and started re-installing some of them and noticed a fair amount of rubbing even with a lot of shims.

The wise course would have been to do about 3 rows to make sure we had the process right and then do the rest. Oh well….
