central - east central Minnesota -

AR Plowboy - 9/2/2025 16:37 As I have previously mentioned I have removed the attic insulation from old home for rewiring. Really glad I did that before starting on the wiring. Have made good headway on the wiring project so time to think about replacing the insulation. This is a 1950 home and the original 6 inch layer of insulation was just pushed up snug to the eve block off board. In later years another layer of batts was layed in on top of that. So do I need to add those rafters vents that extend up the roof aways between the rafters. If so do I need to drill a hole in the block boards between each rafters. This house has been this way since 1950. I am sure I will end up with deeper insulation and probably blow it in.

The vents are made to accommodate the airflow from vented soffit panels that are in the overhang of the truss/rafter outside of the wall. I can't tell from your pic, but it appears there isn't any soffit venting area in that area? ?
I'm not sure what's required in your climate - but, if it's worked for 75 yrs, I'm not sure I'd change anything at this point, without the help of an expert in venting from your local area. So, no, I wouldn't add those vent shouts . . . . . .
I will add, I'd likely use mineral wool insulation batts vs. fiberglass batts. But, that just me.
