What was the obsession at Allis Chalmets with small wheels? I have zero experience with Allis. I do greatly respect their motors. I just think most farmers were turned off by the lack of 38” rubber.
Needed their equipment with their hitch to get traction. Dad had a Farmall M that he pulled a 3-16" rope trip IHC tag plow with. He wanted a diesel tractor and knew he did not want a gas start IHC. He had the Allis dealer bring out a D-17 to demo. He left the tag plow in the ground and unhooked. They hitched up the D-17 and it just sat there and spun. He hooked the M back up and off he went. Dad was done talking. The Case dealer had a used 401 Case diesel. They brought it out and he did the same test. The Case just idled away with the plow. Dad traded the M on the spot, wrote out a check and went to plowing. The truck driver took his check and hauled the M away. The only pieces of 3pt equipment he ever had was a 8' 3pt IHC disk and a post hole auger hooked to the Case in all the years he had it. But he sure wasn't going to buy a tractor AND their special plow. He loved that Case as it had pressure down on the Eagle hitch for digging post holes....James |
