I had a boss once with a phd in statistics who bought a weekly $1 lottery ticket.  Same thing, said he just enjoyed the hope and the game of it, despite really knowing the odds on the math.  It was a small luxury and thrill.

I thought it was nuts, but harmless as he wasn’t addicted or anything like that.
