| The Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus by saying that He was loyal to Caesar instead of God if he paid taxes or by saying he was a criminal if He didn’t. Like always He was way ahead of them. I do believe that verse teaches we should pay our taxes, however I don’t think that’s a blank check for the government to take anything they want and give it to whoever they want. Especially not OUR government. The founders fought a war to prevent that kind of thing. Think about it…..if that’s all there is to it then where does it end? Do you have any property rights at all? If the government owns the money then they have the right to redistribute it to whoever they choose. You wouldn’t have any right to complain if the government decided to tax you out of everything you own and give it to your neighbor because he produced crops a little more efficiently than you. “After all comrade, it’s in the public interest.”
That’s absolutely not how this country is supposed to work. There’s nothing we can do about the taxes we have to pay, but we don’t have to be part of the problem by taking anything we can get.
Adrian Rogers (a preacher from some years back) had a saying that he liked to use to describe the current world’s philosophy. It was “Get all you can, can all you get, sit on the lid and poison the rest”. I certainly don’t want to be described by that attitude. I hope none of you do either. | |
