I do not necessarily disagree with your analysis of what will happen to us smaller farmers. I think it is the sad truth for many. I’m not so sure ending subsidies would accelerate or slow down this process. Most large farms I know of are very good at milking the programs for all they’re worth. Also, my farm would be in that bottom 1/3 and we are surviving (it’s not easy) even with everyone around us having the advantage of the taxpayers taking all the risk out of farming. Eliminating the subsidies would help a lot to reduce the price of inputs across the board. It would also eventually help with commodity prices because we’d have less production.
That’s all beside the point however. Doing what is right isn’t always practical, at least from the point of view of this world. I am a Christian and firmly believe that God doesn’t want anyone to take socialist handouts. When you boil it down socialism/communism is a system of government based on theft and He is very clear on that point. I completely understand what you’re saying about paying all these taxes to a government that mostly either squanders it or gives it to people who didn’t earn it. It is infuriating. However, the last I looked it is the top 6% of taxpayers who pay 86% of the taxes. You’re not just getting your own tax money back. I cannot fix the government but I can refrain from taking money that the government offers that I have no right to.
Thanks for taking the time to discuss this without getting angry. It is more than most people are willing to do.
