You say variable speed with electric, so I assume you are going to have a VFD. If your VFD is set correctly, it will monitor system pressure and spool up the pump if it drops below a set pressure point. It will always keep the system primed for you.

A foot valve was mentioned above, and is the other piece of the intake you need. But, no need to put the foot valve in the water. Fabricate your suction adapter with a check valve in it. It will hold the suction pipe full of water.
