Just driving to Denver thinking to much.
With the availability of cheap hay and corn my math says I can feed+ yardage them for under $1200 for the year. ($2ish a day in feed) That’s cheaper than the interest on the land required to graze them locally.
Could LRP an unborn fall calf at #500 June delivery for $1800. Which costs $95 a head leaves a pretty good margin.
Tell me what Iam missing?
Why not just double the stocking rates of the pastures you already have?
Set up fence line bunks and after the spring flush of grass, start feeding/supplementing them. Cows have the pasture to walk around and do what they are meant to do, yet get there daily requirements in a bunk.
Could probably do every other day feeding starting out until grass is over ran. Year like this you would of got through July and now would be to the every day feeding.
This would work if pastures are in close proximity. Get a silage truck with a side unload and a big box so you have enough to feed multiple groups or one really large group.
Might make sense to have 300 or 400 head overstocked on one 160 acre pasture and daily feeding and then move the whole herd to another 160 acre pasture when the timing is right. Bulk feeding in one spot versus traveling in 2 or 3 different directions every day.
For someone young wanting to run cows this would be a full time job and a way to expand without adding more acres.
