Southeast Colorado | My Grandparents on Dad's side were born in 1916 and 1919. They lived in San Diego and Grandpa built WWII airplanes. I did ask them one time about the atmosphere after Pearl Harbor. They talked about the blackouts..........where a siren would go off and everyone had to shut the lights off. Was interesting for sure.
My Grandpa on my Mom's side was in the Pearl Harbor area when that happened..........but shortly after was fighting the Japanese in the air since he was a pilot. His carrier was sunk (Lexington in the Battle of the Coral Sea), but he survived. Later was shot down off the coast of Japan towards the end of the war in 1944..........so neither Mom or (definitely) I ever really knew him.
EDIT: On a funny note, I was just recently privvy to some of his hand written flight logs. The way he wrote about the dirty Japs and such is somewhat hilarious. Totally politically incorrect.............but justified BIG TIME for what he was going through. Haha!
