SW WI | This was back in the early 90’s if that matters or not. But yes did pencil. I could never get great tons per acre….let alone come close to RFV and protein of western hay. Throw in machinery cost.
There is opportunity cost in making your own hay. I’ll give an example.
My son builds grain bins, he also feeds cattle. I told him…don’t worry about your hay, I’ll get it, worked in with my own. I just figured it would be more efficient for me to worry about it vs taking his time of “ am I cutting today or not cutting, how about raking, is it fit to bale”
What do you think he made an hour building bins….vs pissing around with hay? | |
