Subject: Favorite stories from Grandparents

Rice County, MN
Since harvest season is upon us I'd like to share this tale.
My favorite harvest story told to us by our grandma and her sister-in-law was about their threshing get-togethers. It was quite an event in the early days of steam when the threshing machine and traction engine would get setup in the field near their home. Neighbors would come from the area with their grain to help each other. The ladies and girls would spend the morning preparing dinner. The men and boys threshed the grain while tending to the horses and myriad other tasks.

When it was time to eat all the horses were taken care of first, then the guys would eat. When they finished the yard would be full of guys stretched out on the grass for a nap while the youngsters played. The women ate while the guys were napping for about 20 minutes then all would wake up and get back to it. Once the few leftovers were packed up and the dishes cleaned the ladies would visit and as the threshing finished all would head home. Some of the ladies would catch a nap as well.

They had fond memories of those days.
Any other stories to share?
