Several above I have heard, can't believe that none of you said "Can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Another of Dad's was "fits like a hand on the a$$."
Another one I have heard from then older generation, but not often was "So poor the they did not have a pot to pi$$ in or a window to throw it out of"
When someone askes what do you know, the version I use and I have heard is "It takes a big dog to weigh a ton"
