Subject: John Deere pickup header, pull type, doesnt feed well

Parker, SD
We have a 3975 pull type chopper with a 5-6ft? pickup header, not sure the model, im sure its an older one, I think it came with a 3970 or something we bought many years ago. We have a terrible problem with product making a hay bale in front of the teeth instead of feeding into the cutter, is this just the nature of it, it does it in all crops, heavy crops feed better but they still have issue. I see like on the newer balers and self propelled headers they have the little bumper roller, i assume to help product feeding. Is this necessary? do we need a newer header? Id like to put some speed on it too to help with the trucks driving beside and help the blower work.
