My Grandfather sent corn through livestock because it was easier to ship 1/5th the weight (or less) in livestock to town than grain, and there were markets for livestock, and not so much for grain. Cash Cropping, other than wheat, in much of the midwest didn't really even start until the 1940's. If "everyone" gets into livestock, there won't be any profit in that, either. It will saturate very quickly. The big thing around here right now is layer barns. So I guess we're going to go through that cycle. Each contract is less profitable than the last, and nobody wants to be exposed on their own. We run cattle, but haven't fed them since the price run up in 2014. Maybe I'll dust off the bunks again. Who knows. |
