We buy a lot of combines in the 3 to 5 year old range and have done this for years. Have never once had a combine tech out since we were battling an auto header height problem on a 2188 20+ years ago. Between info from this place and youtube a guy can do everything necessary on a red combine. The only thing we have techs out for is to program a controller on a jd tractor or sprayer. Also to drive a crank seal into a 9L because it is a special tool. We sent one 8330 in for a transmission swap but we got a bid for that and held them to their number.

Is the guy buying the 2188 going to take the hydro off himself to take it to get the splined shaft replaced? Is he going to do the brakes on the transmission himself? Is he going to fix the leaky liners on the 8.3 himself? The unload elbow, the fan under the seat, the cone and vanes, the rotor variable speed pulley, the broken rear axle, the shaker bushings every 500 hours, the shoe rails when he doesn't, the excentric pivot rails when they break, the final drives, ect...

He can do all these things, but will he? Techs get just as much an hour for those things as they do for working on a newer model. The kicker is a newer model won't need those things for the most part. Everyone is afraid of losing that $60k engine that never happens.
