I don’t believe for a second you only got 4-6” of rain with little subsoil. Lot of 140-180 county corn yields in E SD in 2021. It would gave been a zero with that little of rainfall.

No you cant tile enough or enough economically for that amount when the bulk of that comes in 2-3 months. Best crops are always when the plant available moisture isn’t maxed and it still takes tile time to reduce the water in the soil and then the soil below the tile is saturated. Root growth is as important as rainfall and too wet in spring restricts root growth.
