North Central Illinois
I'm a firm believer in making periods of family time a priority, so don't agree with the "he should have been working instead of taking a family vacation."

A lot would probably describe me as one who takes care of stuff like the OP's friend. I've loaned/rented a few pieces out and I've rented a few at times with a select group of people. I totally respect the position of SWNE in that sometimes the best way to do a favor is offer custom work for a fair rate so that the equipment owner is in control of how it is cared for.

From the description, I think this is a classic case where the correct answer is no with a friendly but clear reason why. If a friend can't accept "no because there are liability risks that I don't want to take and your threshold of care for equipment is different than mine," then I don't think they're going to be your friend long term anyhow.
