S Illinois | I have to defer to others on the cattle side. Cattle guys or I should say the cow/calf guys have had to see it almost more as a calling rather than a real profit center to stick with it the last 10 years. I don’t know where their profitability would have to be to turn the tide of pasture conversion. I would almost think that the industry would find a way to house and grow cow/calfs like dairy or something similar. It’s tough seeing large scale pasture returning. Sub $4 corn for 3+ years might however. Just such a different means of production vs 70 years ago when walking corn off the farm to make a profit was less work than actually hauling the corn off. Now grain farming is the easy button and requires little actual work. Not many going to give that up without being forced to. | |
