I know a guy who owned a gas station/convenience store for a while 15-20 years? He sold it 2 years ago. He told me that the oil companies watch consumer spending in real time and adjust their prices accordingly.

Consumer spending goes up, gas prices go up. Spending goes down and gas prices go down (or stay the same).

He was pretty adamant that he was correct on this.

I noticed that about 7-8 years ago when gas got up to $4 economy would slow and down came the gas price, rinse and repeat.

Gas is generally, actually almost always about 30 cents cheaper in Colfax then Bloomer, 16 miles apart or so, all I can say somebody must be making money.
Other interesting observation: There is a Kwik Trip around every corner and the price is determined by hoe close they are to Woodman's or Fleet Farm, further away they are the higher the price.
