Locally owned/operated family Chevy dealership sold out to a big city multi location dealership. in dealing with the family dealership it was really relaxed, no non sense and an easy experience in purchasing a car. historically I have ordered my vehicles, generally since the lot selection was minimal and I want specific items/features.
This spring I decided I should start to replace one of my pickups. Go to new ownership dealer. After explaining over and over they did not have what I wanted on their lots and I would just order one. Sat down with salesman and went thru the GM build and buy site. Salesperson gives me the print out and i agree that we can order it. Ask the price listed is my price. Given a yes, but rebates, incentives and finance rates would be as on delivery. Give the dealer a $500.00 deposit. (never ever gave one to old dealer, just a hand shake). This is May 8. Few days go by and get email stating GM picked up my order. Weeks later (mid June) get email saying truck will be built in Mexico first week of July. Hear nothing till this week that my truck is at dealership and come in to finalize deal. I ask for the VIN to get with my insurance and get coverage. Insurance agent comes back with quote and tells me it is a 26 model year. When ordered the build/buy sheet off the GM site the dealer gave me at our specing out the truck and the receipt for the $500.00 both reference 25 model year.
Email dealer asking if the truck is a 26. They come back as Yes it is. I mention well good thing we locked in price. dealer comes back and says price is not locked in as rebates/incentives and financing are as time of delivery. This is a different stance on the topic than I remember at time of ordering the truck. to me the rebates, incentives and finance rates are all POST price. To me truck price and delivery charges were locked in. If rebates, incentives went down or up, that was on me.
I asked why did they deliver a 26. Dealer said that they were building 26s when it was built.
I am thinking if I order a 25 and GM is in fact building 26s when they build it, some communication would be made stating we are building 26 do you want this or do we cancel the order? I also think that there is some obligation to either honor the agreed price or at least inform of price change with me.
I question the dealer and they say I ordered the truck and they did what we agreed upon. I say I ordered a 25 with the build sheet they gave me and they are delivering a 26 at the higher 26 cost.
They claim I am obligated to go thru the purchase ond or forfiet my down payment. I dont order or buy open ended priced items !!!!
I really dont care if it is a 25 or a 26. What I am miffed about is the lack of obligation on going to the build and buy GM and then ordering a truck that in essence has no locked in price.
I googled some and what I read is I should of had a signed purchase agreement with all the details at time of ordering. Frankly it never crossed my mind as it was always a hand shake and the deal went to both parties satisfaction. We historically had some "issues" but always thought it worked out fair for both parties. Education on my part if this open ended pricing is real.
I find it hard to believe I ordered a truck in early May and it was picked up by GM in late May and they didnt build it till 26 model year were being built and NO communication of the changes coming my way.
I would think if it was a GM mess up I would have heard something. I speculate the dealer messed up somewhere and it trying to cover it up and use smoke and mirrors to cover the truth.
In the end it is not a great deal of money and I will have to pay the higher price if I go somewhere else and order another truck thru another dealer.
I dont want to be that guy in this situation, but I also dont like what I perceive as bait and switch or less than honest business dealing.
I am NOT in a position i have to have this truck. I could tell this dealer to forget it and go to another dealer and order again. But if this is how it does truly work then I could just be going down the same road again.
Any have experience with build and buy? Is the price at the build and buy the price you pay, rebates, incentives, financing excluded? Ever have one go over model year change and have old price honored or did you pay the increase? did the dealer communicate thru out the process????
