West Lafayette IN | I was at an August field show for AgriGold in Converse Indiana a few years ago when Randy Dowdy was the speaker.
He asked if anyone had paid more than $10,000 per acre for farmland. I said that I had. He asked if I had irrigation. I said no. Randy said “ that’s just foolish to pay that kind of money for land and not have irrigation”. I said “ in Indiana, drainage tile gives a better payback than irrigation and land ownership gives a better payback than drainage tile”.
All of the sudden, it started pouring rain and it was so loud in the metal shed where he was giving his speech that no one could hear him. He had to wait until the rain quit to finish his speech. Again, this was in late August.
I wish I would have bought a lot more land when it was only $10,000 per acre. It doesn’t seem foolish now.
