Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa | Normally I have sown grass seed Sept. 1-12, and had decent luck. Personal things all goofed up for the fall season, so decided to sow some grass seed 4 days ago, on Aug. 16th-way too early. I told wife at supper that the ground is too warm for grass seed to germinate (ISU soil temp. says 76 degrees around here, bet it is over 80 due to totally black soil, no cover). Also told wife that Google says grass seed germinates around 50-65 degrees, so no way anything is germinating now.
But I needed a reason to get out of the house after supper tonight (4 days post-seeding), drove out to shop, and found grass emergencing within 8-10 inches of the electrical transformer. Balance of the plot nothing. Google says electricity does affect grass seed emergence. You can barely make out the grass on the attached picture.
Still think my reasoning will hold true on the rest-will be 10-14 days before anything else germinates.
Learn something every day, eh?
Regards, Bruce.
P.S. Sorry, picture doesn't seem to be showing up.
