Subject: Tips to limit issues with newer emissions farm semis

Illinois
Recently added a 2018 Freightliner Cascadia and already own a 2016 model. Both had approx 500K miles when purchased, and I hear that’s when fleets usually dump them due to emissions issues becoming common then. The 2016 was a nightmare, and we spent quite a bit of money on sensors, etc trying to make it reliable, but the only thing that worked was a big final repair, which completely eliminated the problem.

I don’t know whether to make that same repair to the new one. The driver does not want to do so. That driver has a habit of a lot of idling, and I just don’t think farm trucks get run hot enough for long enough to maintain reliable emissions systems. They sit at the bins and idle, they sit in the field and idle, then they have a 20 minute trip to the next idling spot.

Are there any driving habits or other maintenance that anyone would recommend to help maintain a more reliable system?
