ecmn | AMF, buckwheat, applying less map or dap, doing less tillage, really bringing in cover crops. That is how you generate nutrients in the soil and how you greatly reduce your reliance upon writing that check
There is no way crop prices right now that the application of phosphorus would pay for itself. And if everybody's going to say well my yields would be set back. Well that would be a win-win. If nobody bought any phosphorus and it dropped our production some, that would help us on both ends.
Phosphorus is very easy to get out of the soil for plants. Soybeans are a great example of that. Look at how many units of phosphorus are in your P1 Bray and look how many units of phosphorus a good soybean crop takes up. And then look at the effectiveness or efficiency of broadcasting 100 lb of dap out there. If a soil test actually worked like a gas gauge, you'd pretty much be empty after one good soybean year. But it doesn't work that way
How many times have we been down this road of order your p&k in the fall get it spread and then next spring and all summer walk around saying I hope we get good weather. I hope we get good yields I hope we get good markets. How many more times do we have to go through that cycle before we start questioning What are we really doing?
Someday and maybe I'm just crazy to say this, but someday trying to overproduce ourselves out of a surplus might lead to poor crop prices while inputs and cost of living only go up
