Saronville NE | Not saying yr wrong that they woukd be better on grass. But with pasture rent here and tye freight involved you can drylot cows way cheaper.
I custom drylot pairs for guys we started in 2012 drought. Have had very good luck doing it. We chop rye silage in spring and cows get rye silage and wdg thsts it. Stsy in very good condition, calves gain well. Try to put in pens thst either had shade tree along fence or put up shade canopy.
We calve in aug and September. After about 3 days old we move pairs to a irrigated feed field and intensive graze it till corn stalks are ready then run on corn stalks till mid jan and then drylot again till wean calves.
Been very successful with this. We have cattle to feed everyday anyway so everything is already out so just feed couple more pens of cows not a big deal. | |
