Chris, have you tried "inversion"? some swear by that...
My younger brother just retired about 2 months ago, he got the same issue. He says its sciatica and is playing the game with insurance, as he is expecting possible surgery.
Wife also had that but avoids back surgery like the plague, for her the shots worked..
