Have you tried leaving the micro SD card in the phone and using the charging cable plugged into a USB port on the PC? Or are you removing the card and using an adapter?
If one method isn't working, I guess I'd give the other a try.
I do this regularly with standard SD cards and a $6 USB adapter stick with a variety of ancient PCs and transferring 0.5-1GB takes about 15 seconds.
