This one's a new one for me, have had lice in the winter time but nothing this time of year. Had this in another herd on a calf this age on another farm, it spread to one other calf but seemed to go away now.

This calf is about 3 weeks old, looks like has some kind of lice but from what I understand lice don't do well in summer on cattle. The other weird symptom was my other calfs ear had similar damage where around the ear tag rotted away and made a hole the size of a golf ball. This one the tag had no signs of any infectiom/inflammation until today. I sprayed this calf down with permectrin but the deal with the ear is very odd. Anyone seen this?

What do you mean “sprayed down with permethrin”?

We’ve had a few cases of “ear abscess” like yours but ours were from around fly tags. Fly tag button “quality” is suspect in my opinion - where the button has a slight raised edge that rubs on ear as the tag jiggles/moves with normal ear movement
