Subject: RE: Sweet corn cutter

I have 2 of the shuckbuddies.

They have super good and not so good parts of them.

The good -
- only tool on the market that you dont have to disassemble to dump the bowl when it gets full
- you can dispense good corn into whatever bowl you want, you can see I got some wood and have a 20qt bowl, not too big, but then if something like a bug gets in it you dont have all your eggs in one basket. I dump the 20qt into larger bowls in the fridge as we go
- you can run multiple simultaneously and share the good corn bowl as well as the cob catcher. I use the same table and just clamp them next to each other and have one guy on each side of the table, we did this one year and we were cutting like a dozen in about 40 seconds.
- the design is good, and its low profile
- cost is super affordable
- That clear shield contains all splatters and nonsense so you dont get sticky or anything
- We usually drop a towel over the good corn bowl and that clear tube can still drop the corn in while the rag in on, so even if were outside its still super clean no problem which is awesome, we never have to move the machines once we have them all clamped down, just slide a new bowl under and run till done.
- You only have to touch each ear once, you can shoot them into a trash can or whatever, although we do look thru in case we need to touch up with a hand cutter
- You dont need a table with a hole in the middle which is kind of freaking annoying.
- You dont have to keep stopping to dump the bowl or clean out cobs, use large bins and run till your done

The bad - and they are doozies - PLEASE READ TO SAVE YOURSELF THE PROBLEMS

- The knife is not adjustable, and he doesn't have other knife choices, even if he did, changing all the time would be nuts, skinny ears slide thru and dont cut clean, or leave one Side untouched
- The air cylinder has way too skinny of a rod coming out of it, and no way to stabilize it. some ears are a little crooked, and it will push them crooked, flexing the rod to the side, and then the metal rammer hits the metal knife, and apparently can skin metal off and drop straight into the corn. WE GOT METAL MIXED INTO OUR CORN A FEW YEARS AGO - SOMEONE FOUND A very sharp SHARD OF METAL WHILE EATING AND SO WE HAD TO THROW AWAY 150 DOZEN THAT WE HAD PUT UP. Since then I have tapered the rammer with a grinder, and Im super careful running it, and stop just short up the ram touching the knife, to let off each ear and allow the rod to flex back and then go back at it and push it on thru. You have to realize the rammer thing actually goes into the middle of the knife and inside about 1", so if it is off even 1/4" or less it hits the knife with all that power, metal on metal, and some ears are a little larger on the butt end, so it will slow down building more air pressure and then the cob gives and flies thru the knife with a bang, and if that push ram isnt lined up to go inside and miss the edge of the knife, its a violent collision
- Customer service is AWFUL, and pretty much non existent. I was never ever rude or anything, I did email him and ask if he had ever tried something wood or plastic for the end of the cylinder. He told me they actually were in development of a plastic one and promised to send me 2, 1 for each machine when they were ready. I never received but know they were finished because there is a photo of a white looking one on the website right now, and mine is silver metal. I have called over and over and emailed, he told me he would send, but never did. I bought wood dowel rod, but I never actually made one of my own, honestly I shouldn't need to when there is viable replacements available- he just wont follow up, I dont know what the deal is. When I ordered them he was nice, mailed them right out, was super friendly answered my questions etc, maybe it's a health issue idk.

Yes im passionate about my food machinery, its a great hobby, I really enjoy sweet corn, cheese, cooking and processing apples, grain milling and homemade breads (thats more the mrs, but ive set her up) but stuff needs to work, and also you have to keep in mind your family and kids friends etc safety depends on you not screwing up.

I am currently seeking a corn cutter with adequate design accommodations listed in my pro section above, but also the follow up service. If anyone has any ideas, or is currently working on something, am very open to helping design, test etc anything having to do with processing sweet corn, and have a fair amount of mechanical and fab experience to help. Would love to make my own, but just dont have the bandwidth with a small business.
