| I have the brusher, and use it with the attached water hookup. We just sent 500 ears thru yesterday.
It does OK, but the variety makes a big difference. When I first bought the machine, year one it was a little bit of a disaster and disappointment. Since all 4 brushes run at the same speed and the same direction, and parallel to the ear, the corn just essentially becomes like a driven gear and spins the same speed as the brushes, so there isnt really much brushing action. The result - if the silk is very coarse or attached very well, it just wraps the silks around the ear and then you have no removal at all since the silk is never going to get tangled and removed by the brushes if its running perpendicular to them. So that year we still had 4 guys on the drill with the bottle brush, and a couple people hand brushing so it didn't help much.
Then in addition that same year, the machine got so hot it started smelling like burning plastic and melting the pvc that is used to hold the brushes on either end. The pvc on the drive end is a thin shield, and it warped in the heat and pressed against the brushes and sanded pvc grit all over the inside. The motor is in the bottom part, and there is ZERO ventilation, so even if you are running the water which helps keep the metal cooler, it was still like crazy hot. What I did was add some intake holes to the drive chain end, covered the bottom with thin plywood, and added 2 - 4" computer fans from amazon. This means the air is forced to pull thru those intake holes and then must pass thru the motor before exiting. We ran it hard yesterday and it never felt hot to the touch or smelled, so that was a huge upgrade.
I dont know the variety, but it did a lot better yesterday, the corn came from someone different, but we never hand brushed anything.
I called the manufacturer after the overheating ordeal and was told no-one has ever had this happen in all their thousands of units but me, and also that if I didnt like it I could send it back and he would sell it to his long long list of satisfied customers. Obviously they have only tested on the corn the silk comes off easily so they might be a little uninformed, but to me, it might be a good idea at least check into feedback from real world customers,
