S Illinois | History and the details of history always seem to be remembered more fondly than it actually was. If we went back to planting 20k plants per acre, if we went back to planting later, if we went back to spraying insecticide multiple times or living with 20bu on the ground due to ECB or picking up down corn even at low pops due to rootworm, if we decided that 140bu corn was a bumper crop then maybe we wouldn’t need all these “bandaids”. Yes we are selecting for better yields and yes we are likely giving up some protection against pests, but that’s not because some big push to take farmers money or laziness. It’s because it makes more yield and many times more yield is better than not. It’s up to the individual producer to figure where each breakeven is for each agronomic practice. | |
