Subject: Cropland grazing

Amherst WI
A few years ago we had the perimeter of some farm fields we bought fenced so we could graze the cows on the fields during the year.

The rotation plan is 3 years, split in 3 fields

1 Corn
2.cover crop grazing
3 winter grain (rye or wheat)

The corn field is planted late since there was rye for them to graze until the end of May, then they go to grass. This will be the cover crop field in 26

The cover crop field is where we fed them all winter, this year I planted BMR SS and Sudan grass. They can be on this during the heat of the summer when our cool season grass pastures need more time to recoup. This will be winter grain for 26.

The winter grain field has now been harvested, I’ll plant oats and rye on it for fall/early winter/ spring grazing.this will be corn next spring.

As cattle keep climbing and corn keeps dropping for now this appears to be the right decision.
