Illinois | My husband started teaching Jr. high SS class late last year. There are now more kids in the class than before. In fact he had a Dad tell him Sunday night that his oldest boy said he wasn't going to the HS class in June when he gets promoted. This was from a kid who was complaining about being in the same class with his 2 younger siblings before my Husband started teaching.
We attend an independent Christian church and the curriculum offered is not that great for the Jr. high- some of it is too old for them- but, there is a kid in his class that attends school with a girl that practices paganism- she says her favorite god is the sun god. More of his students attend school with Mormons. So they have been examining the aspects of these different religions that the kids encounter. Next they will tackle evolution.
He has even written 2 short skits for the kids. They film them and they are shown before the sermon. The first one dealt with Adam and Eve- the sermon series was about marriage. The next skit has an Easter message and will be shown on Easter Sunday. The setting of this skit was an ice cream parlor, it was filmed on location at a local ice cream shop, the kids really seem to enjoy it.
It is amazing the way God works in people. I never would have thought my Husband would teach SS. I did not propose this to him when the opportunity arose- this has all been a God thing and a good thing. :-)
Our oldest daughter is in his SS class, that could have helped his decision. Our kids have always enjoyed church and they participate in kids clubs on Sunday nights.
When my husband was 10 to 12 years old he had a male SS teacher that he really liked. He still talks about him and the different things he did with the kids. I think that experience helped show my husband that men can be involved at church, other that serving communion and such things, and they have an opportunity to be a positive influence on kids.
