 Southeast Colorado | We usually let the oats go ahead and mature some. Hopefully the plants are still green.
Oats make superb hay in the boot stage. Sorry hay in the early heading stage. And pretty good hay in the dough stage a little later. Cow guys around here won't pay enough for the reduced tonnage of boot stage hay. When oats are in that early headed stage the cows just sleep on the straw. Later when there's a little grain in the head........they subsequently crave some of the straw and will clean it up much better.
My 2 pennies worth after growing, putting up oat hay, and then feeding and selling it for 25 years.
