C IL | I am having a hard time being excited about the crop with these prices, and subjectively would not say best ever, a lot of not really showy corn with a few unpollinated kernels here and there for whatever reason, planted mid to end of may which is late, and really hot and humid in July. Gls and now southern rust is present. Looked like sulfur deficiencies all June with the cool cloudy weather and behind on GDU’s as of July 1.
Having said that, drone and satellite NDVI says better than historical average, 6-9” rain in July, zero tip back with ears almost popping out the end and still filling, plants look like all the N is there, no 18’s but almost all 16x35 or longer with some still pollinating on the tips, plenty of second ears silking.
If the fungicide can fight off the southern rust there is going to be a lot of corn here. We were getting almost daily light rains in July in the afternoons, 90’s and 90% relative humidity, and despite mid-70 overnight temps the corn only started to tassel mid-July.
Color me surprised after being out in every corn field on this farm but one the last two days. |
