In my 45 years in academics and 36 years at Cornell, I was involved in many of the discussions with seed companies about rootworm resistance and the use of refuges to delay resistance.
Seed companies are divided into scientists who agreed about the potential of resistance. Then there is the marketing group!!! Who chose to ignore the science for the sales. The rest is history and we have lots of rootworm resistance.
How does anything but mixed in refuge make sense? If you have blocks of acres that are traited it is highly likely that the insects that make it out of them will be resistant, because you will about guarantee two survivors will mate. This is a question I feel like I’m missing part of the argument. |
