I just watched a quick video from the farm journal agronomist (Ferrie I think) a couple days ago. He had ears just like yours or only worse. He claimed it was just a weather phenomenon. To much rain and heat at night. He also kept bringing up fog. He claimed all that damage came within a 24 hour period and literally nothing could have been done about it. Really, your ears don't look too bad compared to his. He couldn't even keep his glasses on :).
