A machine shop should be able to build a new tube and probably the auger if they could locate the flighting. Tell your customers what happened so they can find an alternative source of feed while you are repairing. No suprises is good.
I think I would find a second grinder to continue on keep the customer base happy. You really don’t want to turn away the business you built up.
If they find you unreliable they will look at other long term options.
It’s best if he has the long term better option - a second (maybe well used) mill. Keep the customers happy.
There is an auction in Floyd Iowa right now with several mills, I’m sure he could find one somewhere nearby him in a day that would keep the business going while he figures out the current fix.
Yea it costs dollars out of the pocket for a second rig, but livestock need to eat regular, livestock owners care about their critters they want peace of mind they have a feed supply.
When we were feeding more critters, if the mill went down we could throw some oats from the bin at them as a backup, not perfect but peace of mind the livestock would be ok. Yea we worked with an old Gehl 50 and then 55 mill, familiar with things wearing out on the old rigs. Both had the auger removed and just unloaded out the short tub auger 3 feet high….
