I’m sure night time temperatures could be a factor. Could the fact you have been wet during June and July play into it also? Here, if we have a wet June the plant tends to get lazy and doesn’t grow as much of a root system. If it’s stressed some during the vegetative stage and we get a massive root system we have better corn later due to what I think is more roots able to retrieve more nutrients to feed the plant.
I’m wondering if you don’t have enough roots and not enough nutrients are getting to the plant to support a full ear?
