| I was at a field day last week, and there was a farmer panel discussing cover crops. One particular farmer said he is using a mixture of: rye, wheat or triticale, barley, and black oats. The mixture was 2/3 rye + wheat or triticale, and 1/3 barley + oats. Now, my thoughts is: maybe you don't need all 4 in the mixture. However, adding some spring oats/ black oats to your rye could help give you more biomass in the fall, then the oats will winterkill and you have just rye to deal with in the spring. Just a thought. Certainly, worth trying some acres to see if it benefits you. |
