SW Iowa
I did small scale tests a few different years with a hand spreader ahead of leaf drop in soybeans, looking for something non-rye that might make sense to use for cover crop ahead of corn. Rapeseed seemed most promising to me in terms of establishment... I didn't get a lot of growth before it winterkilled but that may work better for you being farther south. I never got much of a stand from radish, turnip, clover, hairy vetch. I've been wanting to try similar tests broadcasting camelina for a couple years but haven't gotten it done.
