Subject: Surface germination of rye vs oats, radishes, alfalfa and turnips

Douglass Kansas

Compared to rye how well does oats, radishes, alfalfa, and turnips grow when spread on the surface.  I have 10+ years of experience of spreading rye on the surface after corn or soybeans in Sept-Dec. and I am wondering how well, these other things will worked when spread in August compared to the rye. I will be spreading on ground that had a cover crop of rye on it that was killed in late April/ early May. I should be able to get better seed to soil contact now than what I get spreading after corn harvest as most of the rye cover is at least a few inches above the ground.

Plan would be to spread 2 bushel of oats, 2 lb turnips, 3 lbs radishes, and maybe 1 lb of alfalfa, when it gets dry enough to spread.
