Subject: RE: John Deere A with hand clutch issues

NW Iowa
There probably is rust in between the clutch disks. Putting it in high gear with the engine running and burning the clutch for a few seconds might smooth it out. As for sitting running with the clutch disengaged goes, I wouldn't say that is a myth but it would have to sit running with the clutch disengaged for many hours before the bearing has damage. In the 74 years I have been around and have worked on 2 bangers I have never had to replace that bearing. I didn't drive a foot clutch tractor till I was 16 years old. I have heard of it happening on a tractor left idling for hours while it was belted to something like an elevator speed jack with the belt tight but just sitting idling alone the bearing won't go out in front of your eyes. That said, I always throw a 2 banger into neutral with the clutch disengaged when I get out of the seat just for safety purposes.
