Faunsdale, AL | Start caps almost always are black phenolic case ones with the hardboard disk/seal in the open end supporting the terminals. They are the higher value of the two types and can survive because they are only in the circuit for a second during start.
The run caps are sealed steel or aluminum and will be a much lower capacitance value. They stay in the circuit as long as the motor is running, so for their capacitance, they are much larger than a start cap of the same capacitance would be.
