UP / Thumb of Michigan
Many people don't know this, but Michigan is the second most diverse state ag state in the US. I've been spoiled by being able to eat a lot of tasty fresh fruits and veggies over my lifetime. Hot days and cool nights make for some great tasting stuff.

My wife and I have become "cantaloupe snobs" over the years. Every melon we ate had to compare to Bay City Honey Rocks. If you never had them, you don't know what you were missing. They're exceptional.

We never made a trip to the UP in the summer without picking up a bushel of Honey Rocks and a bag of sweetcorn to give to our fresh produce deprived friends up here. I don't know what variety people grow to make them officially a Bay City Honey Rock. All I know is that there was no comparison.

My Mom used to buy them, cut them in half and clean out the seeds, and fill that void up with vanilla ice cream. Best desert after a hot day I ever had.

Thats sadly (I think anyway) changed.

Wife was heading to a family picnic in the Keweenaw a couple years back. Stopped at a small store on the way, saw some cantaloupes and decided to take one along. It was so tasty she stopped on the way home and picked up another. Since then, we've found them at Meijers near us.

I don't know what the magic is when they grow Pure Sweetness Melons, but they have it nailed. They're wonderful. Even the green ones have good flavor. Never had a green cantaloupe that tasted like anything much in my life. I'm hoping that Michigan growers can get some seed for them, they've sadly went to second place in my small world. Don't shoot the messenger.
